Jeff’s Corner
Hey, Hey, Hey
Today I’d like to share a couple of personal updates with all you faithful followers of Jeff’s Corner.
First, to quote our General Manager extraordinaire Julie Herbort, I’ve been “traded” to our Main Street location in downtown Fredericksburg for my colleague Chuck on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Details of the swap are murky, but rumors have it there were numerous draft picks involved and large sums of cash.
I worked my first shift downtown yesterday in a few years, and had a great time. I’ll still be at the vineyard Wednesday and Sunday, and look forward (as always) to seeing all of you at both locations.
Next, I’m proud to announce that for the fifth year in a row I’ve been invited to judge the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. This is the biggest honor and privilege of my entire wine career, and is by far the coolest wine related thing I have ever done.
The SFCWC is the largest, most respected American wine competition in the United States. Last year there were more than 6800 entries from 38 states. Judging lasts 3 days (I scored about 120 wines each day), with a fourth day (the “sweepstakes” round) where the best-in-show is chosen for white, red, rose, sparkling, and specialty/dessert wines.
That’s it for now, we’ll see ya on the flip side…
P. S. All my life I believed “see you on the flip side” referred to hearing the other side of a record album. I learned the other day (on one of my favorite NPR shows “A Way With Words”), that it originated in the trucking industry. When truckers would drive the same route back and forth across the country, they would refer to the return trip as the flip side. Pretty cool!
