2024 started with very little rainfall, but in early spring, the rains began and lasted through early May. The spring was fairly cool with some mild to warmer weather starting in June. By mid-June, it turned quite warm with at least two weeks of temperatures over 100 degrees. This heat affected berry sizing and the cooler weather also affected berry set which made for smaller berries and loose clusters. This makes for more concentration in the berries and likely more extracted color and rich flavor. However, those factors also will result in yields that are 20-30% less than typical, depending on the variety. As of this writing, harvest is partially complete, with the Syrah and Pinot Noir the first off the vines. The grapes are well-balanced with good brix and balance of acid and pH. In summary, the 2024 growing season was a little more complicated than 2023 due to the various climatic conditions. Still, with the smaller crop and the clusters being loose and the berries being smaller, the wines from this vintage should be concentrated and rich.
